Public footpaths go through fields with cows. Walk slowly and calmly.
Cows can be very inquisitive.
Cows and young cattle can be very interested in you and come very close. However, it you stop and then walk gently on, they usually keep their distance.
Don't wave your arms or shout. Move in a careful, calm way, if you sense a threat, keep moving with your body facing the cow; don’t turn your back to the animal or run.
A cow with a young calf can be very protective, so walk on, but around the herd if possible. Don't get between the animals and fence or stone wall.
Sometimes it might be necessary to find an alternative route, just be aware of the herd and weather conditions. Windy days can get the animals "excited".
